Novo Esthetics Studio
This has been one of our favourite projects so far. The owner, Vicki, was so splendid to work with and she has a great understanding of what makes something visually pleasing. Just like all of our projects, it starts with pencil and paper—sometimes sketches are made in the very first meeting as we're dreaming with the client. These sketches are always quick and dirty to try to nail down a style.
After we're happy with the direction, it can sometimes take 50+ higher fidelity sketches to really lock it in. Below are some of those sketches.
Every letter form was drawn from scratch. We left some of the letters jagged and imperfect to suggest the organic nature of the business. The symbol is an abstraction of an "N". The shape also create a beautiful diagonal movement which implies a brush stoke or artistry. Vicki is very much an artist with the way she performs each task for her customers. Overall, the logo has a balanced and harmonious sensibility. The goal for this logo was to allow people to understand the feel the business in a single glance. In our research, we found that people described the logo as "friendly" and "approachable".

As a part of the Novo brand, we wanted to introduce other elements and colours that would reinforce its harmony. It is said that the sound of a waterfall is one of the most calming/soothing sounds to the human ear. So to us, it only made sense to find a way to visualize that sound—something that when you look at it, you can almost hear how tranquil it is.
The ink-in-water element extends across the whole brand—even in the print materials.
Every time we take on a website, it's important for us to know what language we're speaking. We don't mean code, or regional language. We mean the brand language. Every brand has a tone of voice—a language if you will. It carries through every platform; social media and web being the largest one.
